"Here, take some honey. It's really tasty and sweet, right? Now take some vinegar. It's really gross and bitter. See, people like people who are sweet. But they don't like people who are bitter. So always be sweet and people will like you."
I understood and went out to play with my sister, Nell and my friend, Laura.
We were bouncing on a trampoline outside, when Nell insulted our jumping skills. Laura and I got mad at her and picked up some gravel nearby and threw it at her angrily. Obviously upset, she ran back into the house. (Yes, immaturity on both sides, I know)
Laura and I continued playing, undisturbed, until Nell came back.
"Nell! You're back! We're so sorry."
"Nah, it's alright guys. Let's have a drinking contest! I have some apple juice for you guys."
We sat down nearby and took the enormous glasses full of apple juice. She stood nearby, ready to be the judge for our contest.
"Ready... Set... Go!"
We gulped down the juice– then stopped.
It was vinegar! Nell had learned from my mother's lesson earlier that day and decided that Laura and I were bitter. She decided we deserved a good, large dose of vinegar.
"Bleh! Nell! That's SOOOO GROSSSS!!!!" We spat out the nasty substance and dropped the cups. Nell walked away slowly, laughing.
Well, that lesson on honey and vinegar became really ingrained in our minds, or at least in our stomachs, after that.
(P.S. Laura didn't eat anything with vinegar in it for five years after "the incident.")
